and needs gas tank seal (rust), tune up, carb

note, bike came with complete but wrecked '73
parts bike. Was running recently, but laid down
and hasn't been running since. I plan a full
"ground-up" resto project over the summer/winter.

The new modified URL is
http://sunserver1.rz.uni-duesseldorf.de/~franza/taiji/
but the old one should work for some weeks, too.

I have the same problem accessing my pages, think the hhtp-daemon is
down. You could try the mirror:

If there are more problems, please feel free to email me.

  Hi,
I found uour page searching Tai Chi on the webcrawler. If
you are interested in adding links to Tai chi sites, I am
putting a list together now. At my speed that will probably
take several weeks (I'm new to this.) When the list is done
it will be on the web at http://www.geopages.com/Sunset
Strip/1007.html. You're right, Mosaic didn't work for
e-mail at your web site. Very impressive job you did on
your homepage!

I haven't seen any published dealer wholesale 'new bike' prices.
N.A.D.A. y
publishes a 'yellow' book of used motorcycle prices that goa
goes back (pardon the typos, but I am away from home using a clumsy
interface) about 7 to 10 years. It lists a 'wholesale ' price, but
not from manufacturer to dealer.

Hello again,

it was just fun to respond to your collection of bikeprice statistics. I´m a
late beginner in biking, being almost 40... But my Honda 750 was an old dream
come true.

I live south of Stockholm in a kind of countryside suburb called Tungelsta.

My line of work is in a multimediagroup at Telia (the largest Telecom
operator in Sweden) where I and my colleagues build and maintain the
official webpages (try them out, you´ll find us at http://www.telia.se).

Interesting that part of your roots are in Sweden, but on the other hand I
guess that it´s not unusual in the US as many immigrants came from Sweden in
the early century.

Anyway, nice hearing from you and have a good summer, I´m off to vacation
now...

Tomas

Thank you for your suggestion about tracking the home page for the Festival.
I went to your "Asking Directions" page and had a personal laugh since my wife
and I also spent three months in India. One aspect we encountered which I did
not see covered in your text was the concept of distance. We found (in the south)
that distance was often "measured" or reckoned in furlongs! After thanking the
person for the directions, we looked at each other and said,
"What the hell is a furlong?!" We came to find out that it was the only English
measure the locals had heard of and they got it from a colonial race track built
by the British. As well, they had no concept of the actual length of a furlong
(I think it is 220 yards). So the distance given to our destination
"It is two furlongs" was meaningless. Still the smile was genuine and the head
wobble familiar.

Wow that was a fast answer......
I am a member of the German Motorcycle Club of El Paso Texas.
And prices over here are a very fractile thing... The Harley market is
completely in the hands of Barnett Harley Davidson what makes a Grand more
than the cataloge price.
The other dealers around in this aerea have good prices and are always ready
for bargain exspecially Kawasaki Honda Jamaha,,,, Expensive here is
Triumph....

  Hi Tom!

I found your Web page via a Webcrawler search on the word "enfield."
I was wondering if you have any scans of the Enfields that you rode in
India!? I own a '95 Bullet 500 and have been trying to some digital
scans of the bikes. Please let me know if you can help in my search.
Take care.

Well please do let me know when you get the scans done as I'm very
interested in acquiring any and all possible documentation. I'm
currently getting some pix developed of my bike and I have a friend
who'll scan them for me. I'll throw you a note when I get them
digitized.

I've got a Bullet 500cc (basic model not the Deluxe), and live in
Mclean, Va. (USA). I bought it from the only U.S. importer of the
Enfield motorcycles in La Plata, MD. Cost me $3700 which I know is a
tad steep, but for a new bike and to someone who's so interested in
them, I think it was a steal. I like the "retro" look, as well as the
feel and ride of the bike. It's just a fun little bike for getting
around town on. I've done a few things to it, but the only major
replacement was to put an aftermarket muffler on it because the EPA
made them literally weld two mufflers together to get it into the
country. Anyhow, I love it. Pure fun.

>I have copies of some sales brouchures, a service manual, and an

Have any extras? I'd love to get my hands on something like this.
I've got one brochure so far. It has a black 500cc on the front of it
and specs on the back, but it was made for US/UK distribution. I've
also got the parts manual and the shop manual, as well as the owner's
manual. The bikes come with all of this except the shop manual which is
$15 extra but well worth it. ;)

Take care.

I found a couple of things about them in India-

1) gearing is real low- excellent when speed limits on roads is 40 kph
(24 mph). Maybe sprockets, if available, could help.

2) all metal is of poor quality. I spoke with some factory people,
and in order to get more life out of their (for India, very expensive)
tooling and dies use softer metal. Be very careful in tightening things-
I stripped a couple of threaded holes before I realized this. Especially
the engine cases.

3) A mod I was warned to make is to cut a spiral oil passage in the surface
of the upper rocker arm bearing blocks. There is no bearing shell, and
no lubrication.

I like the low gearing because I don't intend to get the bike out on
the highway that much. I live around Washington, D.C., and the roads
are a nightmare here. The Beltway (495) for instance is not a safe
place for motorcycles to begin with, and since the bike maxes out at 75
mph, I really don't feel I need to get it out there to begin. I've been
using it to get around town and general touring in the 40 to 55 zones
that aren't part of the expressways. I do need a real road bike though
and I intend to purchase either a Harley XLX (mid-80's bike) or an
older Yamaha V-Max sometime next year. The Enfield, however, is more of
a "fun bike" for local riding. Although I've done some de-restriction
stuff to it, and other owners have toured through various states with
them, I just don't see the bike as a long-haul mc for me.

I must have been lucky with mine, the metal is pretty good all over.
But just today I did see a couple of new bikes at a dealership that
just opened up in Winchester, VA., and they looked a little rougher
than mine. It might have been luck, or maybe they just needed some
serious cleaning up. I stripped the bike when I bought it and polished
and buffed all of the metal. I've also got some previous experience
with aluminum so I'm very careful when it comes to torqueing down nuts
and such. I did manage to twist the oil lines and had to replace them.
They're copper and thus even worse to deal with. I replaced nearly
every washer on the bike too...they use very cheap washers for sealing
and where I didn't swap out that paper washers for neoprene, I used
copper washers. It doesn't leak a drop of oil or gas now!

But hey, all of this is part of the romance of owning a bike like
this...it's what makes it fun. :)

>3) A mod I was warned to make is to cut a spiral oil passage in the

Cool deal. That's one that I hadn't heard yet. I'll have to check
into that. The importer told me that they re-tooled alot of their
equipment to bring the bikes up to US standards. Apparently even the UK
standard bike couldn't get into the US until some serious mods were
made. Regardless, thanks for all of the advice.

  Take care.

Sounds like you had somewaht of a frustrating adventure on your trip to India.
Hopefully our upcoming bike trip is going to be smoother since we are going
with an Indian trip leader who seems to know his country like the back of his hand.
These guys are very good and they mapped out their itinerary themselves.
India is one country I didn't want to tackle independently and after reading
your experience I'll be glad I am going with these Indian trip leaders.
We are going to take in the Solar Eclipse, Diwali Pushkar Camel Fair etc.
I am also looking for a roommate. If you have any tips or suggestions please
feel free to send them. Will appreciate it.

I had a fantastic time!

Note: in India, time is cheap, parts are not. Make it clear to your
guide/mechanic that the opposite is true for you. that you do not mind
paying for a new 59cent washer, rather than piece the old one back together
for another 30 miles.

Don't trust the roadside tire patchers. carry a spare tube, and have them
swap it. the patching is untrustworthy. They will think you insane, but
let them. I had a catastrophic patch failure 1 mile down the road from
a patcher. Fortunately, it was the rear tire, so I just did the watusi
for a while, but stayed upright.

carry spare nuts
bolts- you will lose small hardware all the time. Again,
since time is cheap, the locals will wait till they need something, then
hang out the day or so waiting for the part. Bring locktite. Enfields are
basically metric.

bring the foam insert ear plugs- available at hardware stores. Look like
small foam cylinders.

bring a water filter kit- some are cheap, some are expensive. get one that
removes bacteria. Try a hiking supply store. You will be on the road, between
cities. clean water may be scarce. bring a canteen to filter into.

enough for now?

Would you know the going price for a new Bullet 500 in India?
I've been planning to ride one home. I think the best place to
buy them is in Madras, Tamil Nadu, isn't that where they are
made? Used ones can also be bought fairly cheaply in Goa, too.

I don't know the current price. I would go to Madras- I understood
that few 500's were being built, and that they were hard to come by.
None were available new or used in Calcutta, and they were very rare
in New Delhi.

If you buy in Madras, the bike can easily ship by train to elswhere-
saves much time in going north. figure 200 km a day for travel-
roads are slow.

I understand Goa bikes to be very abused.

That's my plan, buy the bike in Madras, tour in the south, and then
train it to Delhi. From there I can go tour the Himalayas (maybe
Himachal Pradesh). Then I can cross the border to Pakistan, put the
bike in the train to the Iranian border, and then start the long and
_slooowww_ trip back to Europe. It can be done, if you have the time,
and your papers are in order.

That's true, but there are usually quite many to choose from.-

Absolutely true about the papers- even then, some problems arise.
Do you need a Carnet?
I have heard tales of people with same plan forced back to India, and
selling their bikes.

In Iran, you have to pay a deposit that is about 100 % of the value of
the bike, if you don't have a carnet. Sometimes this is not enforced
on bikes, but to be on the safe side it's better to have one.

Yeah, it's cool. I haven't been riding in India, yet, but your
description is hilarious, and describes the 'Indian way' pretty well.
Sometimes you have to ask for directions, even when using public
transport. I've always found it better to ask questions that you can't
answer with a simple Yes or No, like never ask: "Is this road going to
XXXX?" but "Where's this road going to?". Well, sometimes you get a
"yes, sir" for every question you make (usually the person you're
addressing doesn't really understand a word you're saying, more common
in the north than south).

P.S. I sure would like to get an estimate about the price in India,
and plan accordingly. Do you think I should post a query in
rec.travel.asia, and maybe even in rec.moto?

At the time I was there, a new Enfield was approx. 35,000 rupees. I do
not think that inflation is to great there, so esitimate new to be about
35,000 to 40,000 (less in Madras, no shipping to dealer).

Used bikes kept value, and used were about 25,000.

Thanks a lot. It seems that my total costs (excluding the trip, of
course) would be anyways only around $1800 in taxes then (includes the
customs fees etc.), and the total would be around max. $3800. The
retail price for a Bullet 500 in Finland is FIM 30000,- which is
around $7000.

So, while I don't think it's feasible to start a trade here, it's
still worth buying one for personal use this way :-) .

I have been interested in purchasing a 500cc Enfield but have not been able
to find the appropriate information.
Would you have an address or phone number of a dealer in India?
Are you aware of any reason that an Enfield can not be brought into the
states?
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

New or used?

I have been emailing with Markku (Markku.Verkkoniemi@stat.fi)
about his plans to go to India
buy a 500cc bullet, and return home
with it.

I will look for the phone # of a dealer I know in New Delhi for used
bikes. I also have a list of New dealers. However, I will not be
able to look until sept 24th.

ooh boy, carnet. It is a document that is required by most countries
that have high import duties on vehicles. It's purpose is to insure
that if you bring your vehicle in, you will take it out again.
How you get one is to put up a bond to a carnet issuer (none in US)
who will then give you the document. If you should leave a vehicle
somewhere, you forfeit the bond. Typically, the bond amount is anywhere
from 2 to 3 times the value of the vehicle. Also a fee is involved.
I think Canada is a source for US travellers. ESSENTIAL for overland
travel on vehicles.

I was very pleased to come across your "Tai Chi Chuan Page". I
studied the Yang-style, short form here in Seattle for many years,
(1973-83) from a pupil of Jane
Batan Faigo, whom, I believe, were
students of Chen Man Ch'ing in NY and who still run a school,
associated with the Naropa School, in Boulder, Co., when last I
checked. Batan also published a newsletter for several years, called
   "Full Circle".

During the ten years that I studied faithfully, Ben Lo, another of
Chen Man Ch'ing's NY students, now teaching in San Francisco, visited
and guest taught our group. When Michael and Sara left Seattle in
1983 and returned to Boulder, none of the senior students stepped in
to keep the school alive. There is a strong Tai Chi community in
Seattle and Vancouver, Canada; though I've never found a group that
   studies the modified "short-form".

I was interested to see that neither Batan's nor Ben's schools are
affiliated with Patrick Watson. I would assume that they are aware,

I have a number of issues of 'Full Circle'. Excellent publication.
The School of Tai Chi Chuan publishes a magazine format newsletter also,
called the 'Tai chi Press'.

There is a branch of our school in the Northwest, but I do not know
about Seattle. I will check.

When the Professor died, his senior students were unable to hang
together. Each went off on their own, teaching in different ways.
It has been said that to obtain the full picture of what the
Professor had, you must study with each of his senior students.
Each one had embodied different parts of his art.

Thanks a lot for sending your comments about your India trip.
Sounds like you had a good trip - full of adventure.
We are getting ready to leave in October.
Hopefully ours will be smoother since it is being lead by Indian
experts who have been doing these sort of trips for 18 or so years.
These guys are good and seem to know their country intimately.
Their trips were profiled in several publications like Cycle World,
City Bike, Motorcycle Consumer News, etc.

We will have a backup vehicle with a support team travelling with
spare fuel, parts, travelling mechanics, tires etc. Hopefully it
will be a lot smoother than your adventure. If you want to go back

Thanx for visiting my India page, and for your comments.

Good luck on your trip! Roads are slow- don't expect to cover
great distances each day. TAKE CARE of your health- feeling ill
is a real drag. Don't brush your teeth with unpurified water.
Wash your hands frequently with soap (bring some, it is not
generally available where you would wash). I brought my own
water filter canteens. Bring lots of film. local film in
India tends to be heat affected. bring loctite. Road vibration
will loosen bolts, especially bodywork mountings. There are no
hardware stores around to just buy replacements easily. I had my
rear fender drop on and lock up my rear wheel. By the way, there
is a total eclipse of the sun in October (the 24th?) which will
pass just north of Agra. Should be phenomenal in the way of local
reaction.

Tom

I just was one your web page and you mentioned that you were gathering info
on motorcycle pricing.

I own a 1990 Yamaha FZR 600 with 8700 miles. Stage one jet kit, pipe a
Corbin seat (what a difference). It's in very good condition. It's never been
down and has been garaged.

I am looking at a 1993 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-11 with 6600 miles on it. I was
wondering what the bike is selling for and what I could get for mine. Any
info you have would be greatly appreciated.

I searched the web to see if there were any used pricing guides but no luck.
I don't know who to call because bank's that I call only have prices on cars.

Thanks
Alex

I live near Springfield, MA. I've attended "Triumph Day" two years. It's a
gathering of British bikes only. There is competition for a number of
categories as well as the flea market crowd. There were some decent parts,
but I wasn't ready to buy at the time. Now I know what I want, so I'm
looking more seriously.

I have a subscription to Old Bike Journal. I also live near Moore's Cycle in
Hartford which has a lot of parts. I'm not sure they're all original (NOS)
though.

My bike is a '72 T120 Bonneville. It's a five-speed. I don't think it has
any great value but I think I should try to keep it as original as possible.
Do you agree? What about the color scheme. It was an ugly gold with white
on the tank. I'd like to keep the original design, but get away from the
base gold color.

Sorry to ramble. This is probably more than you counted on.

Can you point me to any additional forums, etc. that are involved in fixing
up Triumphs? I'd like to learn as much about them as possible. What's a
good club to join?

Thanks for responding and also for any additional info.

motorcycle shop and they deemed it to be in decent
shape (good compression, etc.). It probably needs
a valve adjustment, a new chain and sprockets,
and a back drum brake adjustment. It also leaks
oil (needs adding every ~250 miles) -- the shop
said it was coming from a couple of engine gaskets
(not sure which ones). There was a little rust on
the forks (can't remember where).

Nevertheless, it hasn't given me any trouble in
the few weeks I've had it. I just use it for
commuting.

Hard to compare them, it's like apples and oranges. The Enfield
is a 350cc single, with very low gearing. Frequent repairs.

the Harley is 1340cc twin, with US highway gearing. About twice
the size
 weight.

where they are similar, is in old, old engine design; reputation
in their respective countries. I often tell people here that the
Bullet is the 'Harley of India'.

Tom

Off hand, I do not know of any sugar-free maple product. I will ask
around, and if I find anything out I will relay. There is someone in
Arlington VT who is marketing maple-water, but I do not know if it is
surgar free (I think it is).

Yes! Putting out pages has been exciting. Only a little bit of

and I am currently in the process of deciding

I am 20 years old, and still in college, (mom and
dad are paying the bill) and so far the threat has
been that if I get a bike, I can kiss my college $$
good bye. Well, last weekend, mom and dad told me
that they are interested in a Honda Helix, and we
went looking at bikes and helixes. They have
thoughts about eventually getting a Goldwing,
anyways, looking at all those bikes was literally
making my mouth water, and I decided that I would
work on breaking down my parents position on
owning a bike. Well, no sooner than three days
after I came back to school, a person I work with
(I am an intern this semester) tells me that he
is selling!
his bike. He is selling his 1988
Suzuki GS850 with 7,000 miles on it, never been
scratched, oil changes every 1,500 miles, and well
stored. All this is 1,200 bucks, and I have
been told that it is a steal, and that I should
take it. I would like to know your thoughts on
this. Partly to help me decide, and another is to
help to convince my parents it is a good idea.
Sorry for all the extra bull----, but just wanted
to convey the whole story.
Thank you for your time,
sincerely,

I don't know anything about you, like coordination, sports/physical
prowess, sensibility/recklessness, etc.

Given that, I would say that I would advise a smaller bike to start.
several reasons:

1) much much easier to learn on a lighter bike.

2) insurance costs much much less. Certain bikes are called
'performance bikes' by insurance companies, and they charge mega
bucks, especially for your age. 'standard' bikes are less, and often
under 500cc is much less. ps, when insuring your bike, give them the
true CC engine size, not name size. i.e., a Honda CB450 is really 446
CC's. If the insurance rate is higher for 450CC or higher, you get the
cheaper rate.

3) you will drop your first bike. Period. get one you won't care about.

4) a more 'sensible' bike will win over your parents better. Soon you
can sell your first, and buy a better/bigger bike. Play the long game,
don't go for broke first shot, and have them reject the bike. Warm them
up buy starting small.

5) take a riding course. Motorcycle Safety or other. Again, lower
insurance
 better PR with Mom
 Dad.

6) Motorcycling is fantastic on ANY bike- doesn't have to be fast,
cool, or new.

7) Remember, cycling is DANGEROUS. People get maimed or DIE. I have
personally seen accidents, broken bones, etcetera. The addage is, 'If
you ride long enough, you will fall down.' Always dress for the fall,
not the ride. NEVER,NEVER without gloves. Hands are the first to hit
whatever the speed of the get-off. Protective clothing a Must. Show
your parents how conservative you are, not how reckless. Talk safety
from the start. Acknowledge risk,
 how you will minimize it.

has electric start, front disc brake, and a 4
stroke water cooled engine. In 1986, these were
features not found on many dual sport bikes,
if any. The bike had 2,800 miles on it when I
purchased it last spring. A new dual sport 650
Kawi runs about $4,900 in the Boston area.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rules-of-the-road from India
Most Indian road users observe a version of the Highway Code based
on a Sanskrit text. These 12 rules of the Indian road are published
for the first time in English.
ARTICLE I
The assumption of immortality is required of all road users.
ARTICLE II
Indian traffic, like Indian society,is structured on a strict caste
system.
The following precedence must be accorded at all times. In descending
order, give way to: cows, elephants, heavy trucks, buses, official
cars,
camels, light trucks, buffalo, Jeeps, ox-carts, private cars,
motorcycles,
scooters, auto-rickshaws, pigs, pedal rickshaws, goats, bicycles
(goods-
  carrying), handcarts, bicycles (passenger-carrying), dogs,
pedestrians.
ARTICLE III
All wheeled vehicles shall be driven in accordance with the maxim:
to slow is to falter, to brake is to fail, to stop is defeat.
This is the Indian drivers' mantra.
ARTICLE IV
Use of horn (also known as the sonic fender or aural amulet):
Cars (IV,1,a-c): Short blasts (urgent) indicate supremacy, ie in
clearing
dogs, rickshaws and pedestrians from path.
Long blasts (desperate) denote supplication, ie to oncoming truck,
"I am going too fast to stop, so unless you slow down we shall both
die".
In extreme cases this may be accompanied by flashing of headlights
(frantic).
Single blast (casual) means "I have seen someone out of India's 870
million
whom I recognise", "There is a bird in the road (which at this speed
could go through my windscreen)" or "I have not blown my horn for
  several minutes."
Trucks and buses (IV,2,a): All horn signals have the same meaning,
viz, "I have an all-up weight of approximately 12.5 tons and have no
intention of stopping, even if I could."
This signal may be emphasised by the use of headlamps (insouciant).
Article IV remains subject to the provision of Order of Precedence
  in Article II above
ARTICLE V
All maneuvres, use of horn and evasive action shall be left until
  the last possible moment.
ARTICLE VI
In the absence of seat belts (which there is), car occupants shall
wear
garlands of marigolds. These should be kept fastened at all times.
ARTICLE VII
Rights of way: Traffic entering a road from the left has priority.
So has traffic from the right, and also traffic in the middle.
Lane discipline (VII,1): All Indian traffic at all times and
irrespective
of direction of travel shall occupy the centre of the road.
ARTICLE VIII
Roundabouts: India has no roundabouts. Apparent traffic islands in the
middle of crossroads have no traffic management function. Any other
  impression should be ignored.
ARTICLE IX
Overtaking is mandatory. Every moving vehicle is required to overtake
every other moving vehicle, irrespective of whether it has just
  overtaken you.
Overtaking should only be undertaken in suitable conditions, such as
in
the face of oncoming traffic, on blind bends, at junctions and in the
middle of villages/city centres. No more than two inches should be
allowed between your vehicle and the one you are passing - and one
inch
in the case of bicycles or pedestrians.
ARTICLE X
Nirvana may be obtained through the head-on crash.
ARTICLE XI
Reversing: no longer applicable since no vehicle in India has reverse
gear.
ARTICLE XII
The 10th incarnation of God was as an articulated tanker

doesn't want to let it go, but he wants to buy a new one soon. Can
you suggest a mailing list to post this bike for sale? Do you know
of anyone looking for a Harley Davidson? I know the following
information about the bike;

Harley Davidson
1983 1340 Superglide
Maroonish-red color/cromed to the max
Great condition/award wining bike!
Not sure of milage, will forward that if anyone is interested.
Asking (firm) $10,500.00

Tom, any advice you can give me I'd really appreciate it. My
boyfriend is so busy with his job all he's been able to do is put it
in the Boston Globe.

The bike is located in Swampscott, MA. My boyfriends name is Jay
Ribicandria and if anyone would like to call Jay I'll can forward
them his telephone number.

Mr. Lichtman,

I visited your home page tonight and sent email, but I'm not sure it went
through (I use Mosaic). I'm hoping that there is an informal network of Tai Chi
teachers. I studied under Robert Smith of Bethesda, Maryland for many years and
lost touch with him when I left the DC area. He is a great teacher, and I
wondered if you knew if he is still teaching. He studied with Master Ben Lo (of
San Francisco). I once did push hands with Ben Lo. Since moving here to Virginia
Beach, I have no teacher. If you know of one in the area, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for your time AND your home page, I'll visit again.

Hi Tom,
A few weeks ago I hooked up to your WWW page on T'ai Chi and found
some interesting items about the School.
I was a student of Dan Ogrydziak's when I was at Umass in Amherst
some time ago and would like to pick up T'ai Chi again here. It
looks like I'll have to go to Holland (as I am in Belgium now) and
I was happy to find the proper phone numbers on your home page. Thanks.

But... I moved recently and I lost the WWW site address and would like to
check it out again. Is it possible to send me the address again?
You wouldn't happen to have more info on the Dutch operation, would you?
Anybody of those people on e-mail by any chance that I can contact?
Any information you can give me is more than welcome.

This might be a cruel question, but is Partick Watson still among us?
Last I heard when I left Amherst was that he was very ill...

my home page is:
http://www.sover.net/~toml

my Tai chi page:
http://www.sover.net/~toml/Taichi.html

On the Dutch crew: Sherry Kent, One of the most senior members of the
school heads the group there. I have a bunch of names, and I even took
a class (1 session) there once. I taught B2 with Tonny Hendriks this last
summer in the US. She lives and teaches in Amsterdam.

> Anybody of those people on e-mail by any chance that I can contact?

If they are, I don't know their addresses.

> This might be a cruel question, but is Partick Watson still among us?
> Last I heard when I left Amherst was that he was very ill...

Cruelty can never exist in the question... it can lie elswhere...

Not a sensitive area. Patrick passed on about 3 years ago, from complications
deriving from his long time process with diabetes. He hung in there far
past all predictions, and passed much material before departing.
The school is as strong as ever, and the life within it is thriving.

which is why i found your bike trip amazing !

I sincerely hope that you had a nice time.

I found your home page via your tai chi page which I reached through
Webmaster. I am a 50 year old newbie to Tai Chi, which I took up to
hopefully help recover from the ravages of chemotherapy treatment. I'm
leukemic. It is more exercise than I expected but well worth the muscle
strain. The meditative benefits are enormous.

From: Greg Goff

Hi,

I just did a Lycos search on Allegro PCB, and your resumee came up.

I'm helping out some friends of mine who are developing a really interesting
new parallel processing system on a shoestring budget working out of their
apartments up in Canada.

In order to complete the prototype, they need to get an eight layer board
done. Apparently, Allegro is the only thing that can read their schematics,
but it would be difficult for them to spend a significant portion of their
microscopic development budget to buy the package at this point.

My shot in the dark is:

        a) Could you/would you be willing to
complete this job in exchange for reason-
able compensation? (this might turn into
        an ongoing relationship)

        b) If not a), do you have any advice for
        my friends?

The people who are doing this project really have their hearts in the right
place, and they've built successful prototypes in the past. They just need
a little assistance to get over this hump.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Greg Goff

I am not sure I can directly help without knowing more, but I can
give a little bit of info.

there is a usenet group dedicated to Cadence tools
 users. There you
can find other allegro users.

comp.cad.cadence

Also, many PCB layout systems other than allegro can still work with
their schematics, if they convert them to a semi-standard bill of materials
(physical package list, i.e. U2 is a 14pin Dip) and a netlist of the format

CCPIFD08X ; P1.115 R64.1 R129.1
CCPIFD09X ; P1.46 R63.1 R128.1

etc.
-----------
in this real list, each signal name has only one line, with connections
listed after.

Can you convert the existant schematics to a similar format? if so,
then you have many options other than allegro.

Other issues are speed of signals in the design, for at high speeds the
routing becomes an active component.

Also, where will the boards be built? Some PCB shops have captive PCB
design tools for handling schematic input.

An example is Compunetics in Pittsburgh PA. They have allegro seats, and
are excellent at taking in schematics and producing boards. assembly also.
(412) 373-8110, jschmitt@well.com

Where in Canada? I have spent a lot of time in and around Toronto.
